As the president of the Rutgers Postdoctoral Association from 2018 to 2019, Dr. Van Buiten helped lead the way in developing a cohesive postdoc community at the Rutgers – New Brunswick campus. The Postdoc Symposium, organized by Van Buiten and her colleagues on the Postdoc Association Executive Board, featured three dynamic speakers who led workshops for career development and a number of informal postdoc “flash talks” to encourage the dissemination of information to audiences outside the speakers’ fields.

Penn State Food Science Graduate Student Representative
As a peer-elected graduate representative in the Food Science Department at Penn State, Dr. Van Buiten advocated for her colleagues at faculty and graduate programming committee meetings, as well as organized professional development workshops to help other students gain transferrable skills which are not necessarily addressed in the classroom.
"TAing 101"With the help of the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, graduate students learned to maximize their TAing experience with teaching techniques that minimize the amount of time spent on TA responsibilities outside of the classroom. Topics included improvement of grading efficiency by writing and using rubrics for a variety of assignments and learning how to communicate effectively with students about scientific concepts as well as assignment expectations.
